What is Vomiting?
Vomiting also called emesis, which is a process of forceful expulsion of the contents of the stomach via the mouth and sometimes the nose.
Some of the most common reasons for vomiting are chemotherapy, radiation, migraines, excessive alcohol consumption, medications such as anesthesia or antibiotics, pregnancy, food poisoning, psychological factors such as mental, emotional or physical stress, motion sickness, gastroenteritis, and acid reflex.
The mechanism of action for vomiting activation is by three different mechanisms; nerve impulses from the intestinal tract, stomach, and other portions of the body. The activation of these different mechanisms results in a reflexive activation triggering the area postrema where the chemoreceptor trigger zone sends impulses and vomiting occurs.
Even though this can be irritating, it is medically manageable. The focus of the treatment is towards alleviating any discomfort and finding the underlying cause to treat it.
Symptoms of Vomiting
The most common symptoms of vomiting or emesis are:
- Rapid pulse
- Abdominal pain
- Excessive sweating
- Chest pain
- Dry mouth
How Does GuruMD Treat Vomiting?
At GuruMD, we offer urgent care for patients with vomiting. If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms of vomiting, all you have to do is create an account to get in touch with a medical provider. Register online and then visit a doctor from your app.
Our board-certified professionals will diagnose vomiting by asking questions about your recent health history and current symptoms. Usually, an office visit is not needed, so going online to see a doctor is convenient and useful.
The doctor may send you to a lab for bloodwork to help the healthcare provider identify potential bacterial infection or any other underlying cause.
The main goal of vomiting treatment is symptom relief. The physician may recommend a specific liquid diet to rest and relieve the stomach and prescribe medications to control nausea. If the cause of vomiting is by food poisoning, the physician would recommend stopping consuming the foods which caused the symptoms.
If severe dehydration occurs due to vomiting, then intravenous fluids may be required for treatment.
The physician will provide medical advice on how to manage the symptoms of vomiting once you receive the proper treatment.
To make sure you're on the right track, we offer walk-in appointments for patients with vomiting. We want to make sure you enjoy a safe recovery process and get all the care you need to overcome your symptoms.
